How to design an AI-assisted research workshop
Structure a workshop around outcomes, practice material and review.
Define what participants can do afterward
“Understand AI” is too broad. A concrete outcome could be organizing a small literature set and checking sources, or performing an analysis task and explaining its limitations. Make outcomes demonstrable.
Adapt to the audience
A research group can practice a shared task. Departmental training must accommodate different disciplines and experience. Continuing education also needs progression, feedback and clear teaching responsibilities.
Validate practical conditions
- Available devices, accounts and network access.
- Whether practice data can be shared or needs de-identification.
- Whether the live tool matches the teaching material.
- A fallback exercise when access or a tool fails.
Reserve time for review
Teach result inspection alongside generation. Ask participants to identify errors, examine sources and compare revisions. This makes limitations tangible.
Use feedback to improve
Record where participants need help and which results are difficult to judge. Follow-up material should include the task, steps, review method and known limitations.
